Mercan Dede Electronic Sufi Music Concert and Workshops in Chicago with TACA partners
Dear Members and Friends,
The Old Town School of Folk Music will be presenting the world renowned Turkish electronic Sufi music artist Mercan Dede. Joining him will be Istanbul Tribe, a group of musicians including Cafer Nazlıbaş (Kemane), Mert Elmas (Percussions), Tanju Yıldız (Baglama), Burak Malçok (Nay), Ismail Lumanovski (Clarinet), and dancer Mira Hunter (Whirling Dervish).
For your information, Mercan Dede and his group are joining us as part of an artist residency program at the Old Town School and will also be giving workshops on Thursday and Friday.
Thursday, June 19th: DJ Clinic w/Mercan Dede at the Old Town School. (Afternoon)
Musicians Ismail Lumanovski (clarinet) and Cafer Nazlıbaş (kemane – spike fiddle) will present a music workshop on Balkan and Turkish Roma music at the Old Town School. (Evening)
Friday, June 20th: Mercan Dede, Mert Elmas, and Cafer Nazlibas will present an ensemble workshop on combining sacred Sufi music with electronic and popular Turkish instruments. (Evening)
Mira Hunter will present a workshop on the sacred Sufi ceremonial dance of the whirling dervish. (Evening)
